Indian Navy: Corona infection confirmed among 20 Navy personnel in Mumbai
At least 26 Indian Navy personnel in Mumbai have been found infected with the corona virus. This is the first major case of the disease in the Indian Armed Forces. Official sources said that all the infected sailors are serving in the logistic and support wing INS Angre and are undergoing treatment at a naval hospital. "The number of infected marines is 26," a source said.
The Navy has launched a massive operation to locate people exposed to the infected sailors. Many navies around the world are battling the corona virus global epidemic. A sailor aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt reported 500 cases of the virus. The French Navy has also been hit by this epidemic.
Sources said that 25 sailors of the infected were living inside the INS Angre complex in a residential building that has one room each while a sailor lives in his house with his mother. Sources said that the sailor's mother has also been found infected.
He said that the Navy is investigating all the people living in the residential complex for virus, it has been declared as 'controlled area' while the INS Angre has been completely closed as per the protocol of ICMR Institute of Higher Medical Research.
In a statement, the Navy said 21 serving personnel were found to be infected with Kovid-19. It states, 'Most of these symptoms were not seen and they were detected through a sailor who was found infected on April 7. All of them live in the same residential block of INS Angre.
Sources said top officials of the Ministry of Defense, including Naval Headquarters, are monitoring the case. He said that the Navy has ordered all its branches to take extreme precaution to protect personnel from Kovid-19.
This is the first time such a large number of military personnel are being treated for Kovid-19. So far, eight cases of this deadly virus have been reported in the Indian Army. Last week, Naval Chief Admiral Karambir Singh had told his personnel in a video message that critical operational assets including ships and submarines should be kept infection free.
He had said, 'The corona virus global epidemic is unpredictable and has never happened before. It has had a tremendous impact around the world including India. He said that the threat posed by this disease is real, near and unexpected.
